Memorial Photo Boards - an Emotional Journey

We had an unfortunate and unexpected death in the family at the end of 2023.  Given my unofficial title as the "photo enthusiast," I stepped up to lead the creation of memorial Photo Boards for the upcoming services.  I love photos and the stories they tell, but these boards were a real challenge, even for me.

Why was it tough? Well, it's the final farewell, the last chance to capture a life well-lived. In this case, not only was it personal, but the passing was sudden and unexpected, hitting us just a few hours after we'd celebrated Christmas together. It left me feeling lost.

Seated at my desk, gazing at the computer screen, I grappled with how to fill the blank canvas before me. Despite my experience in creating such boards, the weight of grief held me back, paralyzing any progress.

Working with a deadline meant I had to put on my professional hat.

But there was a deadline, and people were depending on me. With the memorial service and funeral just five days away, including another holiday in between, I couldn't afford to procrastinate or wallow in sadness. It was time to put on my professional hat and set aside the personal one.

Slowly, I started placing the photos, one at a time - moving, resizing, and cropping. These end-of-life projects are emotional roller coasters, letting us feel everything while doing something tangible to help survivors remember those who've passed. This wasn't my first time designing memorial boards, and it won't be my last. Yet, I felt like everything was so new, as if I was doing it for the first time.

In the end, as I placed each photo and crafted those memorial boards, I discovered a healing journey amid the sorrow.

This is more than just a “work” task; it's a heartfelt process that allows us to pay tribute to a life well-lived, and offer solace to those left behind.

So, if you ever find yourself stuck with a pile of photos, a blank canvas, and tear-filled eyes, go easy on yourself and start slow.  Starting with one photo, the journey unfolds, and you'll find a comforting rhythm in the midst of difficulty. These boards become not only a tribute but also a source of comfort, reminding us that even in the toughest times, memories have a way of shining through.

The incredible power of photos never fails to amaze me, and amid this challenging journey, a comforting light found its way.
